Monitoring and Progress

To address and intervene in the causes that have generated the ecosystem crisis in the Mar Menor (MM) , MITECO proposes a series of comprehensive measures or lines of action to be carried out in the Mar Menor and its catchment basin, focused on:

• Knowledge: Conduct research and measurements (e.g., water quality and the presence of heavy metals). Also monitor the status and evolution of the Mar Menor, create models, and integrate all the information obtained.
• Control: Monitor and inspect the Public Hydraulic and Maritime-Terrestrial Domain to ensure compliance with regulations, protect the Mar Menor and Mediterranean shorelines, and promote regulations of particular relevance to the recovery of the Mar Menor.
• Intervention: Restore ecosystems and renaturalize land, prevent flooding, conserve biodiversity, and promote the transition of productive sectors. All of this prioritizes nature-based solutions and actions at the root causes that have led to the imbalance in the Mar Menor.
• Inform and involve: Encourage active participation through information and communication.
