Assessment of the recovery of the socio-ecological system

Based on information and data collected and processed by various public and scientific organizations, a monitoring and evaluation system is established that will produce independent annual progress reports based on indicators.

Prospective works

In December 2022, the Department of Ecology at the University of Murcia developed several preliminary works (reports) for the design and development of MAPMM 8.5 , the objective of which is to establish a monitoring and evaluation system for the good condition and recovery of the Mar Menor, based on the information and data collected and prepared by different public and scientific organizations.

The Domingo Jiménez Beltrán Chair

In January 2024, the general protocol of action between the General Administration of the State, through the Third Vice Presidency of the Government and MITECO , the University of Murcia and the Polytechnic University of Cartagena was formalized to promote point 8.5 of the Framework of Priority Actions to recover the Mar Menor (Independent monitoring and evaluation system).

Since then, both universities have promoted the creation of an Interuniversity Chair called Domingo Jiménez Beltrán Chair - Observatory of Sustainability and Climate Action in Mediterranean Regions (hereinafter, Domingo Jiménez Beltrán Chair ) with the aim of establishing a permanent structure of collaboration between the UPCT and the UMU that includes research, transfer, technical assistance, dissemination, training and other projects related to the subject of R&D&I , and that can generate agreements with other research centers, professionals or collaborating entities, to contribute to sustainability in the Mediterranean regions and advance towards the achievement of the sustainable development goals, the 2030 Agenda and the European Green Deal.

The objectives of the Chair include:

  • Continuous monitoring of sustainability in southeastern Spain and other Mediterranean regions, through the definition and application of indicator systems appropriate to each case.
  • The development of models and prospective studies to explore the expected effects of different scenarios and management options to address key challenges facing the southeast and other Mediterranean regions.

Monitoring and evaluation of the socio-ecological system of the Mar Menor (UMU)

The objectives are:

  1. Validate the different indicators and analyze the interrelationships between the socio-ecological and governance aspects of the system (lagoon, coastal wetlands, watershed, and socioeconomic activities impacting these areas).
  2. Collect the information and data necessary to implement the indicators that will make up the Indicator System for the Mar Menor and its catchment basin.
  3. Prepare an annual monitoring report using the Mar Menor socio-ecological system indicator system as a whole and prepare documents and materials useful for communicating about the monitoring system and the reports produced.

Socio-economic evaluation of the implementation of MAPMM actions (UPCT)

The objectives are:

  1. Review the literature on the provision of ecosystem services in these spaces and the economic valuation of these services.
  2. Assess the provision of ecosystem services using Geographic Information Systems (GIS) tools.
  3. Conduct an economic analysis of the provision of ecosystem services using environmental valuation methods, such as stated preference or benefit transfer methods.
  4. Analyze the proposed actions according to a Cost-Benefit model.
