Based on information and data collected and processed by various public and scientific organizations, a monitoring and evaluation system is established that will produce independent annual progress reports based on indicators.
In January 2024, the general protocol of action between the General Administration of the State, through the Third Vice Presidency of the Government and MITECO , the University of Murcia and the Polytechnic University of Cartagena was formalized to promote point 8.5 of the Framework of Priority Actions to recover the Mar Menor (Independent monitoring and evaluation system).
Since then, both universities have promoted the creation of an Interuniversity Chair called Domingo Jiménez Beltrán Chair - Observatory of Sustainability and Climate Action in Mediterranean Regions (hereinafter, Domingo Jiménez Beltrán Chair ) with the aim of establishing a permanent structure of collaboration between the UPCT and the UMU that includes research, transfer, technical assistance, dissemination, training and other projects related to the subject of R&D&I , and that can generate agreements with other research centers, professionals or collaborating entities, to contribute to sustainability in the Mediterranean regions and advance towards the achievement of the sustainable development goals, the 2030 Agenda and the European Green Deal.
The objectives of the Chair include:
- Continuous monitoring of sustainability in southeastern Spain and other Mediterranean regions, through the definition and application of indicator systems appropriate to each case.
- The development of models and prospective studies to explore the expected effects of different scenarios and management options to address key challenges facing the southeast and other Mediterranean regions.
