The Technical Office of the Mar Menor (OTMM) , dependent on the Ministry for the Ecological Transition and the Demographic Challenge (MITECO), has presented objections to the development of the partial plan 'El Escobar', an urbanization with a golf course in Jerónimo and Avileses (Murcia) , due to its possible impact on the lagoon and the flood control works that are being planned in development of the Framework of Priority Actions for the Recovery of the Mar Menor.
The Partial Plan's action unit, which covers an area of 500 hectares, divided into nine phases and a total of 2,900 homes, could have "negative impacts" on the Mar Menor catchment area and, consequently, on the lagoon, according to the OTMM (Town Management and Urban Development).
This MITECO body has reminded the Murcia City Council, which has opened the public information period for a new phase to advance the development of this urbanization, that the main cause of the degradation of the Mar Menor has been the "chaotic" occupation and transformation of the watershed , with the expansion and increase in pressure from agricultural, livestock and urban activities, mainly, in addition to tourism and mining.
