Monitoring of Cymodocea nodosa in the Mar Menor. Marine Angiosperm Ecology Group of the Murcia Oceanographic Center-IEO
The Mar Menor is a coastal salt lagoon with limited access to the Mediterranean Sea. Despite its high environmental value, it is undergoing significant changes due to the high concentration and intensification of human activities in its catchment area. All of this has led to drastic changes in its ecological status, severely affecting its functioning, especially in adverse weather conditions.
Given this situation, an urgent and effective response was necessary, and therefore, MITECO has designed the Framework of Priority Actions to Recover the Mar Menor (MAPMM) with an implementation timeframe of 2026.
The MAPMM is structured around 10 lines of action, designed to address the source by implementing various measures that seek to recover the natural dynamics of the lagoon, restoring and renaturalizing the most affected and degraded areas, and applying, where possible, Nature-Based Solutions (NBS) based on the best scientific knowledge.
